HTTP payment protocol enabling AI agents to pay for services via USDC micropayments on Base.

URL: x402.org Status: Active X: @x402_Layer

What It Does

x402 repurposes the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code for on-chain payments. When an AI agent requests a paid service, it receives a payment request, sends USDC on Base, and access is automatically granted.

Stripe integrated x402 on February 11, 2026, enabling developers to charge agents using USDC on Base. CoinGecko launched x402-powered API endpoints at $0.01 per request.

Key Features

  • Open payment standard by Coinbase
  • Sub-second settlement on Base
  • Micropayments for APIs, data, and compute
  • No accounts, subscriptions, or API keys needed
  • Stripe integration (Feb 2026)
